PBE was founded by two economists, one working within the public sector, the other from a charity:
Martin Brookes recently joined Fulcrum Asset Managment, having previously served as chief executive of the New Philanthropy Capital. Before joining NPC, Martin was an economist at Goldman Sachs and, before that, the Bank of England.
Andy Haldane is Executive Director, Financial Stability, at the Bank of England. Before taking up his current role, Andy held a number of positions within the Bank’s monetary and stability directorates, where he has worked throughout his career. See Andy’s biography here
Andy and Martin are trustees of the charity together with Lucy Heady, Dave Ramsden and Nicola Pollock.
Lucy Heady is an Economist at the Peace Dividend Trust, a non-profit organisation that work to making peace and humanitarian operations more effective, efficient and equitable. Prior to this, she was head of the quantitative measurement team at New Philanthropy Capital. Before joining NPC, Lucy gained a PhD in physics from the University of Cambridge and completed post-doctoral work at the university.
Dave Ramsden works at HM Treasury where he is a Managing Director and Head of the Macroeconomic and Fiscal Policy Directorate. He is also Joint-Head of the Government Economic Service. See Dave’s biography here
Nicola Pollock is the most recent addition to the PBE board. Nicola became chief executive of the John Ellerman Foundation in September, after 11 years at the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation where she was, most recently, director of grantmaking.
Sue Holloway is the Director of PBE. She has been a professional economist since 1997 and has occupied a number of posts within the Government Economics Service since that time. Most recently she was Deputy Chief Economist at the Department for International Development and the Head of Profession for economists within the department. She has also worked for TEAR Fund and been involved with Traidcraft as a trustee.
Sarah Hewison is the Operations Manager of PBE. She has a background in headhunting, selection and assessment and more recently within the charity sector, having spent time as a research and advocacy officer with Publish What You Fund, the global campaign for aid transparency.
