Assisting the Maternal Mortality Campaign
The Maternal Mortality Campaign approached PBE to find an economist who could investigate data on maternal mortality and morbidity, and child mortality, to apply to an economic argument supporting interventions. We matched MMC with an economist from the Bank of England who spent time working with MMC and looking at the relevant data that exists.

First phase of project with Greenhouse completed
Greenhouse empowers young people in London’s disadvantaged communities to realise their potential through sport and dance programmes.
The charity approached PBE to do an economic evaluation of their programmes. We introduced them to a team of volunteers who work for the National Audit Office and have just completed the first phase of the work.
This takes the form of an advice paper to the charity, with proposals to enhance their data collection in the school year 2011-12. The volunteers are planning to use this data to produce an economic evaluation of the Greenhouse programmes in the second phase, which is due to conclude in Autumn 2012.
Pilot Projects
Pro Bono Economics began with pilot projects, to get things up and running, and to learn more about how the idea might work in practice. These projects were not without challenges, but have been valuable for the charities, the economists and for PBE.
We continue to make matches between other charities and economists. We currently have more than twenty projects underway and are discussing the feasibility of many more, spanning the charity sector and bringing new and interesting challenges.
Our first completed, for the St Giles Trust, was completed in March 2010.
St Giles Trust
This project evaluates the benefits of the St Giles’ “Through the Gates” programme.
The programme is aimed at reducing the rate of re-offending. It provides a range of services including pre-release assessment and, following release, accommodation and help in reintegration and employment search. In examining the economic impact of the Through the Gates programme at St Giles, Frontier Economics has confirmed the value of this important work.
