Project Background

Barnardo’s Performance, Planning and Quality (PPQ) team is located in the Directorate of Impact and Learning in Barnardo’s. The PPQ team is responsible for driving the charity’s approach to raising its performance across all disciplines, delivering continuous improvement and efficiencies thereby supporting the delivery of Barnardo’s 10 year corporate strategy.

Barnardo’s are seeking external support to provide general professional mentoring for the Barnardo’s Economist (who sits within the PPQ team), and quality assurance, on a small number of economic projects in 18/19.

In terms of background, quality assurance for this type of work is currently provided by the Head of the PPQ team who is on secondment from HM Treasury. However, the secondment is due to end in the near future, meaning there will be no one at the organisation to provide this type of  oversight and offer general economics mentoring support.

An example of projects carried out in 17/18 include:

  • Econometric analysis on factors that affect children’s mental health.
  • Cost-benefit analysis of a children’s service which supported young people to get into Education, Employment or Training.
  • Analysis on how the organisation allocates income generated from fundraising and retail.

Project Brief and Deliverable

Ad-hoc support to the Barnardo’s Economist both in terms of overseeing specific pieces of short term economic/econometric analysis (there are usually c3-5 of these per year) and general professional economics mentoring support.

Time Commitment required

A cumulative total of no more than 3-5 days during the 18/19 financial year (likely to be made up of 1-3 hour segments). Likely to start after June 2018 and would be spread across the year.

Location

Can be conducted via email/phone or face to face  (dependent on location and availability of budget). The Economist is located in Barnardo’s London office (Euston).
