In response to today’s ONS release of Labour Market Statistics, Anoushka Kenley, Research and Policy Director at Pro Bono Economics, said:

“These statistics show the economy is springing back to life as the number of people entering the labour market grew by nearly 200,000 in May. We are within touching distance of normality across much of the economy but things are still not shifting for the hardest hit.

“Charities are inundated with demand from those most exposed to the pandemic’s economic consequences. The number of long-term unemployed people has increased by 100,000 and young people have been left behind. While many older adults are heading back to work, the chances for young people just starting out have been gutted.”
